About
Here at Random-American you will find snippets and links to news articles I deem interesting, a few lines of my own comments, occasional long drawn-out ramblings, and even comments left by other persons who may post. Hopefully the snippets and posts will at least cause people to think and lead to some rational discussion.
At some point you may be offended by something I or another poster says. Well the beautiful thing about the First Amendment and the freedom of speech is that although I have every right to say what I want, you also have the right to not have to read it. And should you become excessively offennnnded, then let me direct you to the X in the upper right corner which allows you to close this browser window. Although I don’t plan on moderating messages, I also reserve the right to delete blatant asshatery if I find it necessary. Afterall, this is my site.
So, what is a Random-American? Well, in a nutshell, it’s just your run-of-the-mill, everyday, average freedom and liberty-loving U.S. citizen. It’s not a German-American, or Mexican-American, or African-American, or Irish-, or English-, or Portugese-, or European-, Indian-, Middle Eastern-, Asian-, or any other form of labeled-American. But if there absolutely must be some sort of classification applied to a common U.S. citizen, then just consider it, quite simply, a Random-American.
I believe the quote below sums up my beliefs on what being a true American means.
“In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile…We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language…and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” ~~ Theodore Roosevelt, 1919
I believe that we need to focus more on our unity as a people than our diversity and differences. Americans have come from many cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities, melded together as one people. We are the United States of America, not the Divided States. We need to celebrate more of the things that bring us together, not the things that push us apart.
I believe that continuously applying labels and pointing out our differences does nothing to promote inclusiveness as Americans, but actually keeps us divided and often alienated. In such a case, the all-inclusive melting pot soon gives way to the salad bowl effect, where everything is distinctly different within the same enclosure. The sooner we stop focusing on our differences, and come together as one people, Americans, the better we’ll be as a nation. I also join in Dr. King’s dream of a nation where people will not be judged by the color of their skin but by their merits and content of their character.
For people who seek to have their shot at the American dream of freedom, liberty, and capitalism, are willing to endure the years of hassles and thousands of dollars to immigrate here legally, and will accept our national heritage, history, traditions, culture, and common language, I welcome with open arms.
“A man who thinks of himself as belonging to a particular national group in America has not yet become an American. And the man who goes among you to trade upon your nationality is no worthy son to live under the Stars and Stripes.” ~~ Woodrow Wilson
I believe that, even with its faults, the USA is still the greatest country in the world. The freedoms and opportunities that exist here are unlike anywhere else. Even most of the “poor” here have continuous electricity, own a color tv, a car, telephone, refrigerator, and microwave. Hell, that’s a better standard of living than the middle-class of most European countries. And for all the anti-US detractors or those that snivel about how hard life is here… if the US is so bad, why are millions of people trying to come here?
I’m sure you will notice that this site has a decidedly conservative/libertarian slant. Should you decide that offends you, let me be clear in stating that I give less than a high flying googly dookie.
